Message from the NSF ADVANCE Program Office

Dear ADVANCE community,

The ADVANCE Resource and Coordination (ARC) Network is an NSF ADVANCE funded effort to support, build, and expand a vibrant ADVANCE grantee community. The ARC Network promotes emerging research and promising practices with an intersectional perspective to improve gender-based equity for STEM faculty.

The ARC Network hosts the annual ADVANCE Equity in STEM Community Convening (formerly the ADVANCE PI Workshop), Emerging Research Workshops, and a Virtual Visiting Scholar Program, as well as webinars throughout the year on topics related to intersectional gender equity in STEM.

The ARC Network also supports the community with a rich collection of over 6,000 curated materials and resources created by ADVANCE and other equity in STEM change agents. The ARC Network Resource Library has a particular emphasis on intersectional gender equity for STEM faculty. If you have any questions regarding the ARC Network Resource Library or want to add to the collection, please contact Bethany Farmer, the ARC Network community librarian, at bethany@wepan.org.

The ARC Network newsletter is an important way to share and stay up to date on ADVANCE-related job postings, events, report releases, toolkit announcements, and more. Please share this newsletter with your project team and the leadership, faculty, and staff at your institution and encourage them to join the ARC Network to subscribe, connect with others across the country, and learn more about intersectional gender equity for STEM faculty. Joining is free and takes just a few minutes!

Best wishes to everyone as you implement your ADVANCE projects and/or work to sustain and build on the grant work already completed.

Jessie DeAro, Keri Ann Sather-Wagstaff, and Chrystal Smith,

The NSF ADVANCE program team

Call for Proposals for 2023 ADVANCE Equity in STEM Community Convening

The call for proposals for the 2023 ADVANCE Equity in STEM Community Convening is now open!

Since 2019, the NSF-funded ADVANCE EiSCC has served as the convening for NSF ADVANCE grantees in a format that facilitates engagement with change agents within and beyond the NSF ADVANCE community. The ADVANCE EiSCC brings together a variety of change makers from higher education, professional societies, industry, government, and non-profits in an engaged exchange of knowledge, resources, and support to drive systemic change in STEM. The 2023 ADVANCE EiSCC will take place June 5-7 at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham, NC.

Attendees have an opportunity to share new research findings and exchange resources; brainstorm strategies; collaborate in novel ways; learn about avenues for funding; and demonstrate effective programs and interventions for greater collective impact.

ADVANCE Midwest Partnership's Cross Institutional Mentoring Communities

Cross-Institutional Mentoring Communities (CIMCs) are part of an NSF-funded ADVANCE Partnership Initiative between Iowa State University, Michigan Technological University, North Dakota State University, and Western Michigan University.  CIMCs aim for individuals to benefit from an enhanced sense of community and belonging. The program is intended to reduce isolation and exclusion and to develop additional networks outside of the home institution.

CIMCs are designed to create networks of mentoring as a robust support mechanism for faculty with personal characteristics and/or specific identities, especially intersectional identities traditionally underrepresented in STEM (e.g., women of color, LGBTQIA+ women, differently-able women) or simultaneous demands of an academic career and family caregiving responsibilities. The communities emphasize career obstacle problem-solving during discussions every 2-3 weeks.

Equity in the News

A selection of equity, diversity, and inclusion-related articles.

"Fighting Racism in STEM" by Ryan Quinn in Inside Higher Ed

"A new National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine report notes some improvement in minority representation in higher education related to science, technology, engineering, math and medicine (STEMM)—but not enough to match those groups’ share in the overall population . . . They are recommending systemic changes to better support minority groups to not only enter STEMM education but to work within and advance their careers within universities, hospitals, industries and other STEMM workplaces."

Equity Resources

"Equal Access: Making STEM Departments More Accessible to and Inclusive of Faculty with Disabilities" by AccessADVANCE

“Application pools for faculty positions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have become increasingly diverse. However, the inaccessible design of the employment application process, as well as facilities, software tools, services, and online resources on many campuses, continue to erect barriers to some applicants and employees with disabilities, including those who are also members of other marginalized groups.”
