Save the Date for the 2023 EiSCC

The next Equity in STEM Community Convening will take place June 5-7, 2023.

Co-hosted by WEPAN and the ARC Network, the EiSCC brings together change makers from higher education, professional societies, non-profits, industry, and government in an engaged exchange of knowledge, resources, and support to drive systemic change in STEM. Building on and integrating the NSF ADVANCE PI meeting, the 2019 inaugural EiSCC, and WEPAN's annual meeting, the EiSCC continues to include emphasis on advancing intersectional gender equity in the STEM academy and to serve as the NSF ADVANCE PI meeting. What happens when we convene the experience, expertise, and partners from 30 years of WEPAN with 20 years of NSF ADVANCE in one place? To start, nearly 200 speakers and over 70 sessions centered on advancing faculty equity in STEM joined us last year, anchoring the EiSCC as THE national convening of STEM equity professionals and change agents.

Analytics for Equity Initiative - Exciting new opportunity to access NSF data for research purposes

The U.S. National Science Foundation is piloting the Analytics for Equity Initiative to support social, economic and behavioral sciences research that leverages federal data and scientific advances in researching equity-related topics for greater public benefit.

Led by NSF and in partnership with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the White House Office of Management and Budget and other federal agencies, the initiative links interested researchers directly with federal agencies seeking to answer research questions captured in their learning agendas in equity-related research themes.

Proposed budgets may not exceed $75,000 and NSF plans to invest up to $1 million in contracts, subject to the availability of funding.

Equity in the News

A selection of equity, diversity, and inclusion-related articles.

"How Gender Bias Worsened the Peer-Review Crisis" by Sylvia Goodman in The Chronicle of Higher Education

"Mounting evidence suggests the peer-review crisis in academic publishing was worsened, in part, by a system that favors male scholars and discourages women. A new study of nearly 50 journals in the British Medical Journals Publishing Group found that women accounted for less than one in three peer reviewers — scholars who are experts in their field and are critical to vetting new research before it’s published in academic journals. The proportion of female peer reviewers grew by only 2.9 percentage points between 2009 and 2020."

"You must aim high’ - ‘No, I never felt like a woman’: women and men making sense of non-standard trajectories into higher education" by A. González Ramos & N. Räthzel

“It is no secret that the ‘glass ceiling’ preventing women advancing to leadership positions exists in academia as well. Spain is no exception. Gender relations are usually investigated independently of other power relations like class and ethnicity. In our sample (80 men and women in different academic institutions across Spain) we found that not only women but also men from working class backgrounds have difficulties making successful academic careers. Therefore, we use an intersectional approach to investigate the relationship between gender and class. Comparing two life-histories, we explore what strategies individuals employ to overcome the barriers with which they are confronted.”

“Pushing the Limits: The Need for a Behavioural Approach to Equality in Civil Engineering" by C. McCarthy, D. Thomson, S. Barnard, et al.

“Diversity within civil engineering has been limited by the sector’s failure to recruit and retain minorities. A contributing factor to this disproportionate turnover of out-group members is hostile and discriminatory treatment from peers and managers. When evaluated critically, equality approaches intended to reduce discrimination within organisations have been found to have either no impact, or even a negative impact. It is posited that employee perceptions of organisational fairness influence employee attitudes towards equality approaches and must be considered before undertaking further work in this area.”
